Enhancing Performance at London's Royal Opera House
Wright & Wright breaks ground on a state-of-the-art rehearsal space at London's world-renowned performing arts centre.
A new project by Wright & Wright is underway at the Royal Opera House.
This summer, the practice is delivering an imaginative reworking of the Chorus Rehearsal Room that will marry accessibility with state-of-the-art acoustic design. Working in close collaboration with theatre design and acoustic specialists Theatre Projects, Wright & Wright conducted extensive analysis on the performance and accessibility of the room for the Royal Opera House’s world-renowned chorus.
Seating up to 105 choristers led by a Chorus Director and Assistant Chorus Master, the design prioritises and enhances sightlines, a gentle curved form creates a welcoming and enveloping space. Bespoke hardwood panelling, designed with differentiation and depth in mind, greatly improves the room’s acoustic response.
Making use of the Opera House’s brief summer recess, the project will be completed with modularised fabrication and installation, such as the panellised timber attenuation, in order to meet the design aspirations within a tight building programme.
