Hull Truck Theatre
Most theatres use energy-heavy air conditioning systems that are costly and unsightly. In contrast, Hull Truck is naturally ventilated. According to the services engineers, Max Fordham, Hull Truck is ‘probably the greenest theatre built to date’.

We developed an innovative integrated strategy in conjunction with the Design Team. Pipework is fed with water, pumped up from the aquifer via two boreholes, and assists the heating strategy for the building. In the auditoria fresh air is drawn in from cowls at high level. As the plans developed, we worked closely with our engineers to develop pockets of space to be used as discrete air-paths in the centre of the plan. The air is warmed by the audience and equipment and then rises, to be extracted through long attenuated paths in the ceiling of the space to maintain acoustic integrity.
